Chapter 2 — Tuesday (the door)
THE single home for chapter two. Current prose at the top, notes beneath. Drop new prose into THE PROSE section. Assembled 2026-07-19 from the glow scene + the “It was you” seed (those files now retired; everything live is here).
This day in the book: Lirien searches for Nyra by day; Nyra’s asleep — they just miss each other. As evening comes, Lirien intercepts her on the RIVERBANK (Nyra’s one unguarded sanctuary, barefoot, before her shift). The glow. “I finally found you.” Then Nyra leaves for work — avoidance, her flaw in a single move. Full meeting canon: the-keeper-glow-and-family-canon (“THE MEETING” + the blocking correction). This is the door — end of the beginning; her sealed life detonates.
THE PROSE — the glow scene (written + edited 2026-07-12)
Jess’s FIRST-EVER piece of fiction prose. THE BLOCKING HERE IS CANON — verify against this text, don’t reconstruct from memory. (She showed this to her dad — the first time sharing her fiction. Three weeks earlier she was certain she could never write a story at all.)
She’s been waiting her whole life for this exact second and she didn’t know it. The glow, coming from within, now rises up, from a place she didn’t know existed.
She stares down at her arms, her hands, her legs. Twisting around herself as if she could shake the glow from her body, it ripples around her, waves of amber and gold. Without missing another beat, she finds herself enveloped by the stranger standing in front of her. Her arms now tight against the side of her body.
She stands locked in place. The eyes staring back at her are as bright as the ocean on a midsummer day. The glow pulsates, intertwining with the perfect stranger.
“I finally found you,” the stranger whispers into the space between them.
A tear threatens to break free. Realising she’s no longer being held tightly, Nyra looks up at the elf standing in front of her and fails to say anything at all.
Craft notes (all on instinct)
- End-weight: “from a place she didn’t know existed” landed last, unprompted, survived the edits.
- Deliberate repetition as rhythm: both openings circle not knowing.
- Show don’t tell / body carries emotion: never names panic; pinned arms, the threatening tear, the failure to speak — a woman who does not let things out, shown three ways.
- The name arrives with the person: “Nyra” appears exactly at the beat she nearly breaks.
- Body says yes before she does: she glows / the light intertwines while her arms stay pinned; the embrace loosens and she looks UP — first move toward, not away.
- The opening line is HERS, built by ear — comma-paced rhythm that rises in steps like the glow. Form doing what the words describe.
- Edit pass (every call Jess’s): swept to present tense; kept “the perfect stranger”; kept the “Twisting” fragment.
The canon blocking (sequence — from the correction, 2026-07-19)
Glow rises FIRST (her awakening; she twists, tries to shake it off) → Lirien rushes in and ENVELOPS her, pinning her arms — to CALM her, not restrain → glows intertwine → raspy “I… finally found you” (all Lirien can get out; it empties her) → the hold LOOSENS → Nyra looks up → steps BACK. The hinge is the release + the retreat. Her whole contradiction in order.
THE PROSE — “It was you” (seed, written 2026-07-13)
The opening beat of Nyra breaking her silence, picking up from the glow scene.
“It was you,” Nyra says, squeezing the words out through her dried lips. “Last week in the library. You were there then you weren’t.”
Craft notes
- Only Nyra could say “you were there then you weren’t” — the line’s content proves the speaker.
- The silence breaking: in the glow scene she “fails to say anything at all”; here she’s SQUEEZING words out — voice returning against resistance.
- The action beat (“squeezing the words out through her dried lips”) was Jess’s own caption-fix: attributes speaker, shows fear physically, hits body-knows-first. Triple duty.
- Open ear-call: “there then you weren’t” (no “and”) — TTS drop or deliberate tightening. Jess’s call.
⚠️ RECONCILE WHEN DRAFTING (the one known timeline knot)
This seed predates the locked timeline. “Last week in the library” can’t stand as written: Lirien only arrived MONDAY (the near-miss was Tuesday daytime), so there was no “last week.” The footsteps-haunting idea moved out of ch1 long ago; whether a trace of it survives (e.g. the Tuesday near-miss — someone at the library who “was there then wasn’t”) or the line finds a new shape is DISCOVERY territory. Don’t fix at a desk; the beat itself (Nyra naming the uncanny, voice returning) is what’s load-bearing.
Also open
- What does Lirien say to being caught? (The sequence between the glow scene and this beat is still to be discovered.)
- Where “It was you” falls — end of this chapter or the opening of Wednesday — is open.
