The Keeper - Four Signposts (the gentle structure)

Built 2026-07-14. Jess wanted a LITTLE structure - a direction to build toward - without the cage of a rigid 20-chapter template. This is that: four load-bearing points, planted as SEEDS to expand outward from. Not slots to fill.

The principle (Jess’s own words, 2026-07-14)

“Roughly sketch the four signposts, then from each signpost expand out, layer it up - so I’m not starting with ‘oh god I need to fill five chapters.’ We take the broad signpost and it opens out and out, layers and layers, and that’s where the book comes from.”

Seeds, not slots. The book grows OUTWARD from four points - it is not poured INTO twenty containers.

  • The cage (rejected): 20 empty chapters, each demanding to be filled. Overwhelming, triggers “I’m getting it wrong.”
  • Jess’s way: 4 seeds, each expanding outward - one room becomes a corridor becomes a wing. Structure UNFOLDS, doesn’t wait to be filled.
  • This is the SAME method she already uses (built the whole glow system by expanding ONE rule outward; the WAB-bullet method; the layering method). Now scaled to the whole novel. One interesting thing to pull on at a time - ADHD-friendly by design.

THE FOUR SIGNPOSTS

(They sit at roughly 25% / 50% / 75% / end - the classic novel skeleton. Poles to walk BETWEEN, not a substitute for the walking.)

Signpost 1 - THE DOOR (end of Act 1, ~25%)

The thing that commits Nyra, no turning back.

  • KNOWN. The sister arrives / the glow activates for the first time / “I finally found you.” Nyra’s sealed, hidden life detonates - she cannot go back to being the unread keeper who never glowed.
  • Everything BEFORE this = Act 1 “normal world” (chapter 1: her role, the planet, the airship through her body). This is where the quiet cracks open.
  • Expand outward from here later: what are the beats leading INTO the door (the relocated footsteps - the sister circling, watching, before revealing herself)? What’s the immediate aftermath?

Signpost 2 - THE MIDPOINT TRUTH (~50%)

A reveal that changes everything Nyra understands.

  • KNOWN (and huge). The moment Nyra learns the truth about her father - that she was NOT abandoned, she was PROTECTED. The iceberg surfaces. Everything she believed about her own life (that she was unwanted, discarded) inverts.
  • This recontextualises her whole life and the whole first half of the book - for Nyra AND for the reader, who has been as blind as she is (single POV).
  • Expand outward later: HOW does she learn it? From the sister? The box? Does she believe it at first, or refuse it? The refusal might be its own beat.

Signpost 3 - THE LOWEST POINT (end of Act 2, ~75%)

When it seems lost - the plan fails, hope gone.

  • TO DISCOVER. Not yet known - and that’s fine, it’s a seed to grow toward, not a hole to fill now.
  • Questions to expand from when ready: what does Nyra stand to lose once she’s let the sister/the truth in? Having fled connection her whole life, what’s the cost of finally reaching for it? What breaks?
  • (Per the flaw: the lowest point will be where being seen COSTS her something terrible.)

Signpost 4 - THE CLIMAX & AFTER (Act 3, final ~25%)

She uses what she’s learned; she - and the world - are changed.

  • TO DISCOVER. The shape of the ending isn’t known yet, and shouldn’t be forced.
  • Questions to expand from when ready: what does Nyra choose at the end? Does she step out of the cage (and is that terrifying rather than triumphant, given belonging is the thing she fled)? What has she learned that she uses? Who is she on the last page that she wasn’t on the first?
  • (Per the flaw: the climax will likely be where she CHOOSES to be seen anyway.)

⚡ ENDING-FORKS — the rush of 2026-07-17 (OPEN SEEDS for Signposts 3 & 4 — DO NOT DECIDE YET)

These arrived in a spark-storm while doing the naming canon. They are the possible shapes of the lowest point and the climax — maybe the whole back half, maybe both books. RULE: hold them loosely, write TOWARD them, let the true one reveal itself the way “I finally found you” / the cave / Auravel did. Do NOT pick rationally at a desk — that’s not how Jess writes. These are poles at the far end of the field to walk toward, not tasks.

The central fork (two whole different endings):

  • PATH A — reconciliation: the sister convinces Nyra to come BACK to the elf home planet, to reconcile with their father. Do they both take that risk together?
    • Does the high-ranking father LEAD THE WAY by publicly accepting his half-elf daughter?
    • Is this a TURNING POINT IN ELF HISTORY (a secluded, purity-obsessed race, and a diplomat openly claiming a mixed-blood child)?
    • Does Nyra get her own ELF NAMING CEREMONY — taking an official elf name, formally JOINING THE BLOODLINE (the Auravel line reclaiming its lost daughter — ties straight to the naming canon: she dropped her human surname; here she’d receive the line-name she was denied)?
  • PATH B — rejection / the other search: Nyra REJECTS the sister, and decides now is the time to go back to EARTH — to seek answers from her MOTHER instead.
    • Does she go ALONE?
    • Or does she go WITH the sister — the two of them together, carrying PROOF they were both abandoned (or rather, both protected — the proof the father couldn’t speak)?

Why these press so hard (the flaw connection): both paths are versions of “being seen” — Path A = she lets the bloodline SEE and claim her (the terrifying-belonging she fled); Path B = she goes to make her mother SEE the truth. Either way the climax is Nyra choosing to be seen. The lowest point (Signpost 3) likely sits just before whichever choice — where being seen COSTS her something terrible first.

THE CHAPTER FUNNEL (the per-chapter shape - KEEP THIS)

Jess already does this on instinct - chapter 1 proves it. It’s a lens to hold up, not a cage. Every chapter, roughly:

  1. The Hook - open on a sensory detail, a localised conflict, or a sudden action. (Ch1: the page crinkling under her fingers.)
  2. The Progression - advance the story, weave in world/rules through SCENE not exposition (show characters using/struggling with the world, never encyclopedia entries).
  3. The mini-climax/shift - the chapter’s small peak; something shifts or is discovered. (Ch1: the empty doorway.)
  4. The hook into next - end on an unresolved question or mid-momentum so the reader turns the page. (Ch1: her body buzzing with unmet unease.)

⚡ THE THREE-ACT SHAPE (whole novel, found 2026-07-19) — the highest-level structure

  • FIRST THIRD — THE PLANET. The sealed world; Lirien’s arrival; the near-miss; the meeting; the four days closing toward departure. Tight clock: 6 days, one-day-per-chapter (Jess’s working shape). Ends on the Sunday airship — DOES SHE GO?
  • SECOND THIRD — THE JOURNEY. The adventure, the crossing. She’s left her cage (or been carried out of it), off her known world, in motion, dependent, exposed. Everything she’s avoided happening at once, in transit. (SEED — discover by writing toward it.)
  • THIRD — THE DESTINATION. The settling. Arrival (the elf world? somewhere new?) — where the Sunday choice plays out: reconciliation, or its cost. Ties to the ending-forks / signposts 3 & 4. (SEED — discover by writing toward it.)

Through-line: a woman moving from a place she’s caged in, through the terrifying open middle, to a place she might finally belong. Stasis → motion → arrival = the arc of her flaw.

⚡ ENDING DIRECTION FOUND (Jess, 2026-07-20 — evolves the A/B fork above; found, not locked)

  • NYRA BOARDS THE SUNDAY SHIP — against all her judgement.
  • The elf world is a NON-STARTER as destination — no life possible for her there.
  • The reframe: she boards to go back to EARTH — to face her demons and settle her past. Not rescued: choosing.
  • The choice transfers to LIRIEN: does she come to Earth — knowing it likely means never being accepted back on her home world? The father’s choice, one generation later, reversed.
  • ACT 2 = THE HUMPHREY STRUCTURE: three attempts at closeness, each failing more spectacularly, building to the lowest point.
  • ACT 3 = EARTH, TRACING THE MOTHER. The mother must be FOUND, not visited.
  • THE LAST SCENE: the father arrives on Earth. Book 2’s engine ignites on book 1’s final page.
