The Keeper - Structural Decisions
Decided 2026-07-14 evening. These shape everything downstream - POV, what’s shown vs withheld, and the shape of the series.
POV: Book one is NYRA’s. Single POV.
- The whole of book one is Nyra’s point of view. We only ever know what SHE knows.
- Why: the book belongs to the person who changes most, and that’s Nyra (abandoned->found, unread->seen, alone->kin, the belief she was unloved shattered). Single POV keeps her story undiluted.
- The pay-off of this choice: the reader is TRAPPED in Nyra’s belief that she was abandoned. We do NOT know about the box, the father’s sacrifice, the years of searching - until NYRA learns it. The truth lands as a DEVASTATION, on reader and Nyra at once, because we’ve been as blind as she has. (Dual POV would tell the reader too early and trade the gut-punch for a slow ache - deliberately NOT chosen.)
The sister: catalyst here, protagonist elsewhere
- The sister DOES change and DOES have her own mountain to climb - but in book one her main role is CATALYST: she arrives and detonates Nyra’s world.
- The sister gets her OWN book. Standalone-readable (does not require the series), but adds beautiful depth to Nyra’s book if read in series. Her full arc/transformation lives there. “The sister deserves her own book.”
- This split means neither book shares a spine or dilutes the other. Two whole books, both breathing - not one crowded one.
The iceberg principle (what the deep canon is FOR)
- Everything in the family/glow canon (the father’s truth, the box, the sister’s years-long search, the love letters) does NOT appear in book one as scene/exposition. It’s the ICEBERG UNDER THE WATER.
- Jess KNOWS it, so it presses on every line (the sister’s face, the way she says “finally”, what she doesn’t say) - but the reader only FEELS it until the moment Nyra finds out.
- It gets to fully BLOOM in book two, from the sister’s side. That material = pressure in book one, story in book two. Nothing wasted, nothing dumped.
- (This is Lev’s “leave the load-bearing things loose” at whole-plot scale.)
Airship mechanics: SHELVED (not cut)
- The deeper airship mechanics - it runs on fuel from this planet, which is why it docks here specifically - are PARKED for book one.
- In book one the airship mostly arrives THROUGH NYRA’S BODY: the floor rumbles/vibrates under her feet, dust kicks up through the entrance she has to sweep back out. Sensory, not mechanical. (Lev: pin one physical fact only when it lands on the story; the mechanics don’t land on Nyra.)
- The fuel/docking detail is real and true - likely pays off in the SISTER’S book, where arriving-by-airship actually matters to her journey. Shelved where it pays off, same logic as the sister herself.
Chapter 1 - REVISED (timeline knot resolved)
- The footsteps/sister-watching move OUT of chapter 1. They belong at the “door” (end of act 1), whenever that lands - NOT chapter 1.
- Chapter 1 is now cleanly: Nyra, her role, the planet, the weekly rhythm. No haunting. The airship arrives and she knows it by her body (floor rumble/vibration, dust through the entrance she sweeps out).
- The sister ARRIVING on the ship happens later (a chapter or so on), which resolves the contradiction (sister can’t be the ch1 footsteps AND arrive by airship afterward).
