NYRA — Character Sheet

The at-a-glance home for Nyra. FIRST place to look, FIRST place to add anything new. Deeper detail lives in the-keeper-glow-and-family-canon and the-keeper-chapter-1-blueprint — but her whole self lives HERE. Structured on the _CHARACTER-SHEET-SCAFFOLD (Roffey’s four headings + peg + connections). Fill by WATCHING (see method note): empty boxes aren’t gaps to invent, they’re things not yet watched.

⭐ THE PEG / THE FLAW (the engine)

Being seen has always destroyed her — and being seen is the only thing that has ever saved her, or ever could.

  • Why she hides: her whole life, being seen went badly — her mother’s resentment, the camps, a world that read her mixed blood and judged it. Being seen = being measured and found wanting = being hurt. So she built her whole life around not being seen (night shifts, keeping to herself, a world where no one can read her).
  • The twist that makes it a true contradiction: the one good thing that ever happened to her ALSO came from being seen — she arrived with no proof of worth, someone SAW value in her she couldn’t see herself, and kept her. She can’t believe she has worth unless someone sees it for her.
  • So: the exact thing she must run from is the exact thing she most needs. Can’t live being seen, can’t be whole without it. Trapped between the two.
  • How the plot presses on it: the glow (being seen involuntarily), the intake card (a mirror forcing her to look at herself), the sister (someone who crossed the stars TO see her, carrying proof she was loved). The plot = what Nyra does when the thing she’s built her life avoiding becomes the thing she can’t escape.

1. PHYSICAL / BIOLOGICAL

  • Age: 23 at the story week. (Correction 2026-07-20 — supersedes earlier “late thirties.” Elf side means she ages slowly and reads young.)
  • Species/build: half-elf (human mother / elf father). The “half” reads as a MISMATCH, not a blend — not-quite-either. Elf = uncanny (too much, too still, unmarked, ageless); human = ordinary (warmth, wear, marks of a life). Her inner conflict made visible.
    • Elf side: unsettlingly still; ages too slowly; longer, pointier ears; quietly spoken.
    • Human side: body scarred from a difficult childhood (THE load-bearing detail — the two halves tell two different stories about time: elf unmarked/ageless vs human “I was hurt young and carry it on my skin”). Longer curly hair that gets in the way (human mess against elf stillness — moves while she stays still).
    • Where they meet: eyes slightly rounder than an elf’s, slightly too bright, in an otherwise human face; skin with a tinge of purple you can’t quite place.
  • State of health: [not yet watched — carries old scars; otherwise unknown]
  • Voice: quietly spoken (elf side). [Beyond that — pitch, pace, how much she actually speaks aloud — NOT YET WATCHED. Best found by watching her speak to someone: the grocer, a gatekeeper. Note: she may speak little; the sister/reunion has her go MUTE under feeling.]
  • Gait (partly watched — riverbank, 2026-07-17): off-duty and unobserved she walks unhurried, barefoot by choice (removes shoes/socks at the riverbank to touch the earth), takes the long way home. Her body when NOT performing is open, slow, in contact. [Her on-shift/indoor gait — how she moves through the library at 3am, guarded — NOT YET WATCHED.]
  • Craft note for the page: don’t caption the mismatch — put the ageless stillness next to the scarred skin and let the reader feel it.
  • Dress (⚡ the costume mirror, Jess 2026-07-19): all utilities — trousers and flat shoes. Dressed for FUNCTION, for moving, for working (flat shoes for standing all night at the ledgers, trousers for the riverbank). Nothing announces status because she has none and wants none. Where the sister’s robes say “this is what I AM,” Nyra’s say “this is what I DO” — the world’s own rule (what you can do, not what you are) written onto her body. She’s dressed like a citizen of the world she fled TO — practical, unplaceable — while the sister (THE-SISTER-character-sheet) is still dressed like the world they both came FROM. ⚡ Both wardrobes are self-protection: the sister armours up in belonging she doesn’t feel; Nyra disappears into function so no one can read her — same move as dropping her surname (strip anything that marks her). One more layer of the fracture, alongside the faint-vs-vivid glow, the unruly-vs-braided hair, the dropped-surname-vs-Auravel-line. Never caption — put both women in the room and let the fabric do it.

2. PSYCHOLOGICAL

  • Intelligence: exceptional systems-mind — can visualise the whole planet at once where others see only parts; raises discrepancies, objects to assignments, quietly steers a society through paper.
  • Temperament: self-contained, quietly avoidant, watchful. Functional. NOT a recluse (buys groceries, walks, speaks to people) but doesn’t mix for pleasure or approach anyone more than she must.
  • Happiness/unhappiness: fundamentally unfulfilled — trapped by the thing she’s good at, wanting a life she’s not living (see WANT). Moments of genuine peace exist, but only when unobserved (the riverbank).
  • Self-knowledge: partial and distrusted — she distrusts her own knowing (can’t pinpoint why her gut says a thing; questions her instincts even when right). Blind to her own flaw’s second half (that she NEEDS to be seen).
  • Unconscious aspects (body-knows-first): her body registers truth before her cataloguing mind admits it — the glow rises before she understands; arms/mouth react before she chooses. The truth reaches her through the body first.
  • Attitudes/values: reverence for permanence and the record (see lifestyle); attends to the world by cataloguing it.

3. INTERPERSONAL / CULTURAL

  • Family: human mother (unravelled into resentment, then abandonment), elf father (high-ranking diplomat, left to protect her — tragic, not villain), a full-elf half-sister she’s never met (searching for her). Full detail in CONNECTIONS + the-keeper-glow-and-family-canon.
  • Birthplace/origin: born of a prohibited human-elf union; raised in human worlds, children’s homes, and “camps for children like this” (mixed-blood — a whole hidden class). No current contact with either parent.
  • Colleagues: the intake gatekeepers (Gatherer/Doctor/Lawmaker) — she works nights partly to avoid them. Influence over everyone, closeness to no one.
  • Lifestyle/work: Keeper of records at the library hub on a remote world — keeps the ledgers of everyone’s usefulness/place. Works NIGHTS. Both her safety and her cage.
  • Beliefs/values: permanence is close to sacred (the never-fading ink, writing people into a record that outlasts them). Reads people as “living histories” — histories to be catalogued. The woman with no history of her own keeps everyone else’s.
  • Hobbies/pleasures: riverbank walks (barefoot, reading the land); [others NOT YET WATCHED].

4. PERSONAL HISTORY

major events — including the BEST and the most TRAUMATIC

  • The wound: mother’s affair with an elf (taboo); mother kept her but unravelled into resentment. Abandoned at eight. Camps and homes from 8-16. A childhood of being read, judged, and hurt for her blood — carried on her skin as scars.
  • The father’s leaving: he left to PROTECT her and her mother (they’d never be accepted on his world; staying endangered them). Nyra doesn’t know this — she believes abandonment. Knows him only from ONE picture her mother showed her, very young.
  • The BEST / the turn: arrived on the remote world with NO proof of a trade (unlike everyone else). Someone SAW worth in her she couldn’t see, and kept her. The root of her flaw’s second half — saved by being seen. The one time being seen went RIGHT.
  • The glow, first activation: never fired at coming-of-age (thirteen — mixed heritage, no kin near, nothing fired). Fires for the FIRST TIME EVER next to her sister — a lifetime of dormant chemistry at once, a decade late. (Still to come in the story.)

CONNECTIONS / ICEBERG / MOTIFS

The glow (short version — full system in the-keeper-glow-and-family-canon)

Elf blood glows near kin. Nyra’s is from her father, WEAKER than average (mixed). She’s illiterate in it — never taught to read the language her own body speaks. To any elf who can read it, her weak/mixed glow announces low standing + forbidden union: her body broadcasts her “shame” to the only people who can read it. A huge part of WHY she fled — somewhere no one can read her. Dampened by calm; floods with strong emotion.

The leather bracelet (motif — Jess 2026-07-17)

  • Nyra wears a leather bracelet; she’s always worn it. Remembers her MOTHER wearing the same one. Wears it because — even running from her past — it reminds her there must have been love there at one point.
  • ⚡ THREE BRACELETS, ONE ACHE: the FATHER wears one too (hidden under his uniform, a gift from Nyra’s mother — see THE-FATHER-character-sheet); the mother wore one; Nyra wears one. An object saying love was here without anyone saying it.
  • ⚡ FATHER + NYRA, SAME OBJECT, OPPOSITE CERTAINTY, NEITHER KNOWING: he wears his hidden, to remember a love he KNOWS was real; she wears hers openly, to hope love existed at all. When they learn they both wear it — and the mother did too — the bracelet becomes the PROOF her wounded heart has begged for. The answer was on her own wrist the whole time.
  • ⚡ DEEPENS THE FLAW: she runs from her history but has ALWAYS worn a piece of it. The one thread she never cut. Nobody runs completely; everyone keeps one thing.
  • Craft: never caption it. Just on her wrist. Weight lands only when the matching bracelets meet.

Key relationships

  • The sister (THE-SISTER-character-sheet, Lirien): full-elf half-sister; found the truth via the father’s hidden box; searched worlds for years out of LOVE. The mirror of the half Nyra can’t be AND the proof she was loved. “I finally found you” = the end of a years-long search. They are ONE FRACTURE SPLIT IN TWO (Nyra starved of the father, sister buried under him — each envies the other’s half).
  • The father (THE-FATHER-character-sheet): tragic, constrained; left out of love; keeps a secret box (Nyra’s hair, the one photo, the love letters). He believes the safe-and-happy version of her; she believes the abandonment version of him. A family loving the wrong story of each other.
  • The mother (THE-MOTHER-character-sheet): unravelled believing herself abandoned; gave Nyra up on a promise of a better life. Wronged by a misunderstanding, not a monster.

NYRA’S NAME (canon 2026-07-17)

  • “Nyra” is a very elf name, chosen by the FATHER (persuaded the mother to use it). Rare/unused on Earth. Deepened the mother’s resentment (elf name = reminder of the man who left) and got Nyra teased growing up.
  • Surname: her mother insisted on her own HUMAN surname (Jess keeps reaching for “Blaine” — Gaelic/Scottish, reads Earth-human). First name = father’s elf world; surname = mother’s human world. Her name is the custody battle written on her.
  • ⚡ Nyra is of the Auravel line by blood + amber — but does NOT carry the name (mother refused the elf line-name). She’s an Auravel who can’t say she is one.

⚡ SHE DROPPED THE SURNAME HERSELF (canon 2026-07-17)

When Nyra left Earth she made a DECISION: she dropped her mother’s human surname and became simply “Nyra.” She kept the elf first name (the father’s) and shed the human surname (the mother’s). She kept the parent who LEFT and let go of the parent who STAYED and hurt her.

  • ⚡ THE TELL: a woman running from being seen strips herself to a single unreadable name, no lineage, no placement — but the piece she keeps points at her father. She won’t admit she wants him; she curated her own name toward him.

Inner life — DENIES (canon 2026-07-18, from OU tip 1.5 “denies”)

She denies that she wants her father. She’s spent her life certain he abandoned her and built her whole self around not needing him — yet when she fled Earth she dropped her mother’s surname and KEPT his elf first name, and she wears a bracelet to remind herself love existed. Her actions reach for him while her conscious mind denies him entirely.

  • ⚡ THE DENIAL IS THE WOUND — AND IT IS THE FLAW SEEN FROM INSIDE. Her flaw: “being seen destroys/saves her.” Her denial: “I don’t want my father.” Both are the SAME refusal — if I let myself be wanted and it’s taken away, it will destroy me, so I’ll deny I want it at all.

⚡ AGE CORRECTION (canon, 2026-07-20 — supersedes “late thirties” above)

NYRA IS 23 at the story week. Full solved chronology in the-keeper-timeline: born Yr N; father leaves at her 6 months; homes/camps; care-leaver’s GRANT lands on her 16th birthday and she leaves Earth the same day; two years hopping/working; arrives at the planet at 18; five years to Keeper; 23 now.

  • New texture that 23 unlocks: “a whole life ahead of her — which makes her current existence seem never-ending, though she tries to practice gratitude” (Jess). Young-prodigy Keeper — HOW she rose in five years is an open seed.
  • Exact echo now in ch1: the rejected pair’s young woman is 19; Nyra was 18 at the same desk.
